Issue 78 - Big Tech, Big Rules, Big Leaps!

This week AI is moving from behind-the-scenes to front-and-center making itself useful, making itself regulated, and making itself bigger.

Editors Note

Hey Trailblazers,

If this week proved anything, it’s that even the cloud can crash. On October 20, 2025, a major AWS outage rippled across the internet taking down everything from Fortnite and Snapchat to Prime Video, Coinbase, and even UK government services. While Amazon’s engineers got things back on track within hours, the disruption was a stark reminder of how much of our digital world rests on a few centralized pillars.

At the same time, Microsoft, Salesforce, and California lawmakers each made their own big moves from embedding AI deeper into your desktop, to investing billions into AI infrastructure, to making sure chatbots have to tell you they’re, well, chatbots.

Together, these stories show the double-edged truth of today’s tech moment: AI and cloud power are transforming everything but with great scale comes great dependency.

Stay informed, stay adaptable, and wherever possible, build redundancy into your digital world (and your skills).

AWS Outage Today!

Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major operational disruption on October 20 2025 that originated in its US-East-1 (Northern Virginia) region, during which it reported heightened error-rates and latency across multiple services.

The incident impacted a wide spectrum of internet-reliant platforms — including gaming apps (e.g., Fortnite, Clash Royale), social apps (e.g., Snapchat, Signal), major streaming/retail services (e.g., Amazon Alexa, Prime Video), financial and crypto platforms (e.g., Coinbase, Venmo, Robinhood), and several UK institutions (e.g., HM Revenue & Customs, Lloyds Bank).

Though AWS reported that most services were showing “significant signs of recovery” within hours, the outage highlighted the cascading risks of centralized cloud-infrastructure dependency

Microsoft launches major AI upgrades to Windows 11 & Copilot.

Microsoft has rolled out a set of AI-enhanced features for Windows 11: You can now say “Hey Copilot” to summon the assistant on your desktop, Copilot Vision (which analyzes your screen) is expanded globally, and a new “Copilot Actions” mode lets the assistant actually perform tasks like booking a restaurant or ordering groceries from your desktop. These moves coincide with Microsoft ending support for Windows 10, nudging users onto the AI-integrated Windows 11 platform. Why it matters: AI is no longer just a chatbot in your browser. It’s becoming part of your operating system. This means everyday computing is shifting voice commands, screen-analysis, and AI agents doing real tasks. Tips:

·        If you’re on Windows 11 (or plan to upgrade), enable the “Hey Copilot” feature and experiment with what the assistant can handle (e.g., “Find my last presentation”, “Book a meeting for me”).

·        For businesses: imagine automating routine desktop tasks (e.g., “Generate the monthly report and email it”) via Copilot Actions.

·        If you’re still on Windows 10: make a plan for when support ends and evaluate if the AI upgrade is worth the move now.

Salesforce to invest $15 billion in San Francisco over five years to accelerate AI adoption.

Salesforce announced on October 13, 2025, that it will pour $15 billion into its San Francisco campus and AI initiatives over the next five years. The money will support an AI incubator hub, help other businesses adopt AI agents, and bolster its global presence (including $1 billion for Mexico). Why it matters: Major enterprise software players are doubling down on AI and making it part of their infrastructure not just a feature. Investments at this scale signal that AI is shifting from experimental to foundational in workplaces. Tips:

  • If you’re in a business setting (especially B2B software or services), ask: “What AI agents could we embed in our workflows?” Salesforce’s move suggests the shift is now strategic, not optional.

  • For careers: if you’re working in sales, CRM, or enterprise software, seeing this push means skills in AI-agent integration, prompt design, and workflow automation are increasingly valuable.

  • For entrepreneurs: consider building tools or services that plug into enterprise AI adoption (e.g., consulting on agent-deployment, ethical AI integration, or change management).

California becomes first U.S. state to require AI chatbots to disclose they’re AI when a user could reasonably believe they’re interacting with a human.

California’s Senate Bill 243 mandates that “companion” AI chatbots must clearly indicate they are AI if a human might think otherwise. Starting 2026, certain operators must also submit annual reports about safeguards for users exhibiting suicidal ideation. Why it matters: Regulation is catching up to AI. Transparency and accountability are no longer optional. If you build or deploy chatbots (even consumer-level), you’ll likely need to comply with disclosure and user-safety rules. Tips:

  • If you use or build AI chatbots: review the user-interface text and make sure it says something like “You are talking to an AI assistant” (especially in cases where the user might believe they’re talking with a human).

  • For international readers: this is a sign that other states or countries may adopt similar laws — getting ahead of compliance is wise.

  • As a user: know that if you’re chatting with a “companion” bot, you might now be legally entitled to know it’s AI — good to ask or verify.
